Pleased with ourselves and our perseverance, we decide we needed a break.
Then we make our way to the back of the old town, a gradual climb on a day pushing 28 degs, and, with difficulty find the path to the Castillo. It seems so sad that the junta cannot get its act together to provide a few signposts and information boards. We have to call on a friendly pair of blokes who were having a wander.
The Castillo de Santa Catalina, dominate the hill behind the city, inevitably I can report that it began life as a Moorish fortress and was much altered after the Reconquista. We went up on a Monday and found it closed.
You can see the castillo from our lovely apartment. (In House Apartamentos, Calle Lope de Sosa, 20, 23003 Jaén, Spain+34 953 04 95 67)
Here it is at night, in the background, all lit up. Note my lovely balcony.
Back to our 4(ish) km gradual uphill hike, wild flowers spotted en route are shown below
And here I am at the summit, about to enter the parador (a tasteful 1960s addition to the complex) for a nice cup of tea.
Here is my view from this spot. Note the massive cathedral, more later.
On the way down we rest in a lovely plaza by San Ildefonso and watch boys playing, as they do.
And it's back to a shower and that balcony!
